The Duchess of Padua is a play by Oscar Wilde. It is a five-act melodramatic tragedy set in Padua and written in blank verse. Overblown language, unlikely plot. Not what I expected from Oscar Wilde, and I've read just about everything else he's written.
Can't go wrong with Oscar Wilde.

This play is quite entertaining, short,and written so that you really get to know the characters. The only surprise was the ending....very similar to one of the Shakespeare's.
This old play does not hold up well for today's readers. Very improbable set up history and story. A tragedy that borrows from Shakespeare, but has neither the wit nor the prose, forget it.
Light and enchanting read.
Others have discussed the plot, so I'll just tell you how fun it was for me. (Delightful.) Wilde has strong characters, biting language and an easy to follow plot. With the free price - you have nothing to lose!
This book is written as a play. The theme and style resemble (in a more modern way) a Shakespearian tragedy. In my view Oscar Wilde has written this story with a bit of his trademark humor, but with also with a romantic and social inevitability of doom. Good story but - because of the script style in which it is written - not an easy read.
